Legislation and Regulation

Oribi is special status species due to the fact that they are endangered.

 

 This page contains links to valueble articles, legislation and regulations which affect Oribis.

There are three main types of special status that a species may have in South Africa:

1. A threatened or protected species, (TOPS) listed under the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act (NEMBA) regulations on Threatened and Protected Species;  Oribi are Protected Species

 

2. A CITES listed species, listed on one of the Appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to which South Africa is a signatory; or  Oribi are not listed as a CITES specie

 

3. A species, that has been assessed for its conservation status using The World Conservation Union (IUCN) criteria for red-listing of species

Oribi are currently listed as Vulnerable,  previously they were listed as Endangered.

South African Bureau of Standards and Animal Protection Act No 71 of 1962

The SABS and Animal Protection Act provides guidelines to game capturers and wildlife owners pertaining to equipment and appropriate procedures for the transportation of wildlife and it is in the interest of all parties concerned to stringently follow these guidelines to minimize potential losses.  (South African National Department of Agriculture and National Directorate of Animal Health 1962, South African Bureau of Standards, 2007).

Animal Improvement Act Regulations amended - table 7

Regulations to the Animal Improvement Act have been amended.  

Amendments have been introduced to Table 7 dealing with breeds of animals.

Published in Government Gazette 40058, table 7 contains detail on declared landrace breeds, locally adapted and regularly introduced breeds and breeds currently being evaluated.

To provide for the breeding, identification and utilisation of genetically superior animals in order to improve the production and performance of animals in the interest of the Republic; and to provide for matters connected therewith.

  • Holding pens for temporary housing of animals – Part 1 – Holding pens for wild herbivores at auctions and in quarantine facilities (SANS 1884-1:2004)

  • Holding pens for temporary housing of animals – Part 2 – Vehicles for the transportation of wild herbivores by road to holding pens and other facilities (SANS 1884-2:2007)

  • Holding pens for temporary housing of animals – Part 3 – Vehicles for the transportation of wild carnivores by road to holding pens and other facilities (SANS 1884-3-2008)

  • The welfare of wild animals transported by sea (SANS 10391:2004)

  • Translocation of certain species of wild herbivore (SABS 0331)
